Hawaiian red sea salt, known as ‘Alaea salt, is a traditional salt for seasoning and preserving foods in the Hawaiian Islands. Alaea is red clay, which gives the salt its colour. During heavy rains, the red clay sediment seeped into the ocean from Kauai’s rivers. When the red ocean water became trapped in tidal pools, evaporation created Hawaiian Red Alaea Sea Salt. The red clay seals in the moisture and adds flavor, making it wonderful for roasting and grilling meats.
